Reigning U.S. Women’s Amateur champ Danielle Kang can now add another prestigious amateur title to her resume.
Kang defeated defending U.S. Girls’ Junior champion Doris Chen, 2 and 1, in the scheduled 36-hole final match at Pinehurst Resort to win the Women’s North and South Amateur on Saturday.
Kang, who just finished her sophomore season at Pepperdine, trailed, 2 down, with 10 holes to play, but played steadily down the stretch to claim victory. Kang made birdie at the par-3 ninth (the 27th hole of the day) and followed with five pars and a birdie at the 15th (33rd) to go 2 up. Chen stumbled with bogeys at the 28th, 30th and 32nd holes of the day.
Kang won her U.S. Women’s amateur title at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club. She qualified for the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open at the age of 14 and was one of only six amateurs to make the cut at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open.
