The East claimed the Wyndham Cup Thursday at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C. for the first time since 2004, with Karen Chung closing out the clinching point in a 32-18 victory.

The Wyndham Cup (formerly the Canon Cup) is the American Junior Golf Association's gathering of the nation’s top 40 junior players in an East vs. West (divided by the Mississippi River) match-play tournament. Prior to this year’s playing, the West team had won nine of the last 10 events.

The East team’s girls proved to be the difference-makers Friday, winning nine of the 10 girls’ matches and giving their team some breathing room. Chung, the winner of the Thunderbird Invitational, defeated reigning player of the year Kristen Park, 4 and 3, to win the clinching 26th point.

Chung was in the last group at the 2010 Wyndham Cup, losing to Rachel Morris in the match that gave victory to the West.

“I was definitely nervous this morning going off first,” Chung said. “I was thinking about last year and how I was the anchor for my team. I just wanted to go out there and get a point for us. This was an awesome event, the (East) team got really close and I loved competing with them.”
