Rank Winner Wild Card Last Week
Babineau Lee Westwood

Certainly has the game to win a major, and his experience will be huge in a long, tough week.

Ernie Els

He’s dropped to 60th in the Sagarins, but certainly capable of better golf than that, and arrives to a place with some very special memories looking to contend.

Winner: David Toms (MC); wild card: Lee Janzen (MC)

Rude Lee Westwood

In form, overdue for a major and plays the big stuff as well as anyone since Tiger Woods became someone other than Tiger Woods.

Angel Cabrera

Comes out of left field to win majors - a U.S. Open and Masters. Contended at this year's Masters. Congressional is a ball-striker's track, and Cabrera is one of the best.

Did not play

Martin Phil Mickelson

Could this year be the year? You never know with Lefty. I do know he’s finished second and fourth in the past two U.S. Opens.

Matteo Manassero

The Italian teen has a steady game that should thrive at the U.S. Open. Plus, he’s paired in the first two rounds with the Molinari brothers, a grouping that should make him feel at home.

Winner: Fredrik Jacobson (T-32); wild card: Patrick Reed (MC).

McCabe Lee Westwood

So, the beat goes on for the Europeans at the majors? That’s one way of looking at it. Here’s another: A player who has the game to win majors and has been knocking on the door of them for years gets what he deserves.

Angel Cabrera

Various ailments have contributed to his fall to 86th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, but at major championship time, he’s still a top-10 force.

Winner: David Toms (MC); wild card: Robert Garrigus (MC).

Ringler Steve Stricker

Coming off a victory at The Memorial and in search of his first major championship, Stricker may have his best opportunity this week at Congressional.

Angel Cabrera

In 11 U.S. Open starts, only missed one cut and has made a habit of showing up near the top every now and then. Cabrera even picked up a victory at the 2007 U.S. Open.

Winner: Lee Westwood (T-11); wild card: Chris Couch (T-60).

Miceli Steve Stricker

This could be the biggest mistake picking a favorite that peaked two weeks ago at Memorial, but Stricker seems in control of his game. Which is exactly what you want at a U.S. Open venue. Viva Cheese.

Adam Scott

I like the Aussies this week – Appleby, Allenby, Baddeley and Day – but Scott has Steve Williams on the bag and is putting much better. If he can control his tee shots, Scott will be a threat.

Winner: Lee Westwood (T-11); wild card: Shaun Micheel (T-56)
