Burnett wins Women's Eastern Amateur
Katie Burnett set the pace early at the Women’s Eastern Amateur, and never looked back.
The South Carolina junior opened with 5-under 67 at Yeams Hall Club in Charleston, S.C., to open a 3-shot lead on Virginia junior Brittany Altomare. Burnett, who won the NCAA East Regional as a freshman, went on to shoot rounds of 74-75 to end the week at even-par 216, two shots ahead of Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex, of Wayne, N.J.
Alex made a charge at the title, going 1 under in the final two rounds after opening with 75. It wasn’t enough to overtake Burnett. She finished tied with Laura Wearn. Altomare was one shot back in fourth and Elizabeth Britwell was fifth.
Katelyn Dambaugh, who was runner-up at the 2009 U.S. Girls’ Junior and recently announced a verbal commitment to South Carolina for the fall of 2013, finished sixth at 5-over 221.
