1. Ease and intimacy of routing: 3

Too boxy, too linear, too parallel.

• • •

2. Quality of feature shaping: 8

High marks here; edges of fairways bleed into rough at grade level; fairway shaping and contours of approach areas into greens show careful thought to different angles of play. Green platforms, however, are too uniform when viewed from approach areas and have similar structure to the fall-offs around and behind.

• • •

3. Natural setting and overall land plan: 7

An elegant drive up to the Waldorf Astoria provides a tantalizing look at the back nine. The modest but modernistic clubhouse sets a confident, luxurious tone that matches the quality of the adjoining hotel. And throughout the round, golfers encounter lovely wildlife and attractive, dense beds of muhly grass and cordgrass. Four large ponds envelop the course, and oddly enough, the 16-story hotel along the east side provides much-needed orientation as golfers tack their way around.

• • •

4. Interest of greens and surrounding chipping contours: 5

Modest contours, with slopes limited to back right/left decks or the occasional “bump” that oozes down from the back through the middle; but there’s a point where subtlety is so hushed it can’t be heard – or felt. Upslopes into greens combine with front-flanking bunkers to defeat ground-game approaches and make it a vertical game here.

• • •

5. Variety and memorability of par 3s: 7

From the appropriate tees, the holes range from a short iron to a long iron/fairway wood. The hard part hitting to these elevated greens is carrying it far enough without running over. The diagonal surface on the lovely but elusive and long (238-yard) 11th hole is framed by bunkers nearly all the way around.

• • •

6. Variety and memorability of par 4s: 4

The short, nearly drivable Cape hole, No. 13, 324 yards, is the most exacting off the tee, and the other dogleg left, No. 15, 392 yards, comes close. The rest of the par 4s have a too-similar feel thanks to flanking bunkers that don’t break up the central line of play enough.

• • •

7. Variety and memorability of par 5s: 5

All of the par 5s are straight. There’s good intrigue in that the ideal second-shot landing area is tucked partially behind a slightly raised bunker formation. Three of the holes have eerie similarity; the one standout is the short eighth, 510 yards, with water and sand pinching the narrowest landing areas on the course.

• • •

8. Basic conditioning: 9

Bermudagrass throughout, with 419 tees, fairways and rough, and Tifeagle greens, all overseeded for cool-season play. Lush and consistent, though with surprising (and welcome) firmness in winter. The bunkers are deep, especially at greenside, but are lined and tightly packed so that escape doesn’t require a Houdini act.

• • •

9. Landscape and tree management: 7

Hole corridors through dense stands of sable oaks and palm trees have a long, linear look opened up only by lake frontage.

• • •

10. Walk in the park test: 6

The course, part of a luxurious 1,001-room Waldorf Astoria hotel, sits along the southeast flank of Walt Disney World and targets the high-end tourist niche there.

• • •

OVERALL RATING (not cumulative): 5.5

Golf here is like a sumptuous meal: rich in taste but short on nutritional value.
