Who leads college player-of-the-year race?

Patrick Cantlay, Peter Uihlein and Bank Vongvanij

With two of the three leading player-of-the-year candidates – Florida’s Bank Vongvanij and UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay – in action this week, here’s an update on the race for season-ending awards:

A second-round 78 at the John Hayt doomed Vongvanij to a 15th-place finish, his worst of the season. Vongvanij hadn’t finished outside the top 5 the entire season, and had finished first in his past three starts. His 14 head-to-head losses at the Hayt were nearly triple the number of losses he’d had all year. Vongvanij entered the tournament with a 340-5-4 record.

Cantlay won the USC Intercollegiate on Tuesday. He may leapfrog Vongvanij into the No. 2 spot in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings when they are released later this week. Cantlay has gone 1-T1-2-1 in his past four starts. His head-to-head record in that stretch? 344-1-2. He’s looking to become the first freshman to win Player of the Year honors since Southern Cal’s Jamie Lovemark in 2007.

Peter Uihlein, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, doesn’t tee it up again until the Southern Highlands Collegiate. He finished fourth in his last start, the Puerto Rico Classic. Amazingly, that was his worst finish this season in a team event (he finished 15th at the Western Refining All-American Classic).
