PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – David Streza, caddie for PGA Tour pro Hunter Haas, was arrested by Palm Beach Gardens police Friday afternoon after he was finished caddying in the Honda Classic.

According to Haas, he was informed after his round that his caddie of two years had an outstanding warrant out for a probation violation and he would be taken into custody by police.

“Apparently my caddie had a warrant for his arrest, and it goes back to last year,” Haas said. “He probably knew he needed to take care of it, and I think he just failed to take care of it.”

The on-site PGA Tour security were made aware of the outstanding warrant and persuaded officers to hold off until Haas finished his round, in deference not only to Haas but fellow competitors Sunghoon Kang and Aron Price.

Longtime caddie Joey Damiano was on Haas’ bag Saturday and was almost pulled into duty on Friday when police officers were intent on arresting Streza, 31, on the golf course.

Damiano was sitting near the caddie trailer when he learned of the issue with Streza.

“They just told me something was going to happen and asked would you help out and work,” Damiano said.

Damiano was on-call from the fourth hole on, but was not needed on Friday.

While Streza was in main detention at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Haas was in 18th place and trying to figure out how to record his best finish of the 2011 season.

“Its not easy switching up a caddie … let's take every pro out here and just shuffle up all the caddies and see how they do – see how they deal with it,” a disconcerted Haas said after his round Saturday. “I’ve got to go on and do what I’m supposed to do. I’ve got to play golf, and I can’t worry about what’s going to come out of his problems.”

Haas is in the field next week in Puerto Rico and will be looking for a caddie. According to law-enforcement sources, Streza will be held in jail for 10 days under Florida law and then likely sent back to prison to serve out his sentence.

“Apparently, it’s serious enough that I’m going to have to find a caddie,” Haas said. “I might take Joey. I don’t know.”
