Hoffmann, OSU sweep Southern Highlands

LAS VEGAS – Fueled by Morgan Hoffmann’s medalist performance, Oklahoma State claimed a seven-stroke victory Sunday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.
Hoffmann, the only player in the field to break 70 in all three rounds, finished at 10-under 206 at Southern Highlands Golf Club to top Texas A&M’s Jordan Russell by two shots. After turning in 2 under, Hoffmann played steadily on the back nine, making eight pars and a birdie. The win was the first in more than 2 years for Hoffmann, a former Walker Cupper.
Hoffmann also holds the Southern Highlands scoring record after shooting 62 in 2009 on the way to a second-place finish.
UCLA freshman Patrick Cantlay, a potential player-of-the-year candidate, finished third after opening with 75. It was Cantlay’s fifth consecutive top 5.
Oklahoma State, ranked No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, also received a top-10 finish from Sean Einhaus (eighth). Senior Kevin Tway finished 14th at 4 over, while Peter Uihlein, the top-ranked player in the country, closed with 70 to finish T-21. (Uihlein opened with 76-77.)
California led through 36 holes but stumbled in the final round, shooting 15-over 303 to finish third. Stephen Hale and 2009 U.S. Amateur champion Ben An led the Golden Bears, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
UCLA, ranked No. 3 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished fourth at 12 over, while No. 29 Arizona State finished fifth, another 12 shots back.
