Player diary: Nicole checks in from the road
Nicole Noelle Smith
Nicole Noelle Smith is an up-and-coming player on the LPGA Futures Tour. Nicole will be bringing you her story in 2011 through her own, exclusive blog on Golfweek.com
Nicole Noelle Smith is a University of Tennessee graduate that is in her second full year on the LPGA Futures Tour. She will be blogging every Monday, taking you behind the scenes on what it is like to survive on a minor-league tour.
This last week has been action packed, probably one of the busiest weeks I will have on- and off-the-course this season. I flew coast to coast for my first tournament and had a series of business meetings right after the event, trying to get everything in order before the season kicks off.
It is a tough road out there trying to make it on Tour and all the support you can get is important. You have to spend a lot to make some, and hope this is the year I make it big.
Reality is a lot of us on the Futures Tour will barely break even between our expenses and earnings.
This is why having the support of companies whether it is product or sponsorship is so incredibly helpful.
Case-and-point? That is me on my G5 above. Ha, yeah right! This is my glamorous red-eye flight to Florida last week, but I did feel special with the extra leg room in the emergency exit row and some mini-pretzels when I woke up!
The Florida Open, my first event, went well with a T-15 finish. It was a great warm-up event to the season and a way for me to figure out my strengths in the game and what I need to focus on in the coming weeks to fully prepare for the season.
A great part of being a professional golfer is when people are kind enough to help out in a small but great way. I am a huge fitness fanatic and a fan of a company called LuluLemon Athletica. I was fortunate enough to have the support of Erin at the LuluLemon Tampa Showroom, who outfitted me with some workout gear, and a couple skorts for the course. Plan to see the gear on the road.
Wasting no time, as soon as I landed back in Southern California, I met with a dear friend Jackie G. about a new business she has started called Bring the Pros. The idea is using professional golfers to promote products that we believe in and the public may not know about. The business project we were discussing is called ‘Make the Switch.'
We are promoting Srixon golf balls, prompting people to give up three of their golf balls for a sleeve of Srixon golf balls.
The Bring the Pros project ables me to work during our off weeks, between our events, to help earn some extra cash to support our travels. Every dime helps.
I also took the short trip down to Carlsbad this week to meet with Masun Denison of Adidas Footwear. Masun hooked me last season with a few pairs of shoes, and he was able to outfit me with three pairs for this season. I am doing some product testing for them in the process.
Ohh and check out this shoe, it is the biggest shoe I have ever seen! This is on display at the Adidas headquarters in their waiting room.
Hope you all have a great week; I will be out on the course loving my job. Until then, follow me on Twitter or Facebook fan page to see how life is going!
