Barron cashes first Tour check in years

Doug Barron is making money on Tour again.

It might not be the PGA Tour, but it’s a Tour-sanctioned event and, yes, the money will spend.

Barron, suspended two years ago for having run afoul of the PGA Tour’s drug-testing policy, tied for 33rd in the Nationwide Tour’s Chitimacha Louisiana Open on March 27 to earn $2,900.

It was his first check at a Tour event since his one-year suspension for testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone. Barron, 41, was granted a therapeutic use exemption last fall for low testosterone.

The Tour suspended Barron on Nov. 2, 2009, for using the beta blocker Propranolol and exogenous testosterone. Both drugs, Barron says, were prescribed by a physician. They also are deemed to be prohibited substances on the Tour’s anti-doping list.

Barron had filed a lawsuit against the Tour, claiming that he met the definition of “disabled” under the Americans With Disabilities Act. The suit was resolved, and Barron is back to chasing his dream.

“I didn’t play perfect, by any means,” Barron said from his home in Memphis, Tenn., “but did make 20 birdies and an eagle.”

Barron closed with a 2-under 68 at Le Triomphe Country Club in Broussard, La., for a 4-under 280 total, nine strokes behind winner Brett Wetterich. It was Barron’s first start in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since he missed the cut in the 2009 St. Jude Classic in his hometown.

Barron has played eight full seasons on the PGA Tour, his last in 2006. His best finish was a tie for third in the 2005 Byron Nelson Classic.

His last made cut on the PGA Tour came at the 2006 Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, where he tied for 52nd and earned $11,453.

Barron narrowly missed a top-25 finish and exemption into the next Nationwide event by bogeying the final hole in Louisiana. Nonetheless, he expects to try Monday qualifying for The Fresh Express Classic on April 14-17 at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, Calif.

“There is a reshuffle after four events, and it would be nice to make a schedule for a change.”
