Balicki: Taking an at-large guess

Illinois after winning the Big Ten Conference Championship.

Illinois after winning the Big Ten Conference Championship.

Twenty-seven down – one to go.

That’s how the men’s Division I conference championships stand at this point, with those 27 champions guaranteed a spot in the upcoming NCAA regionals. The 28th automatic qualifier will come out of the Mountain West Conference, which concludes its championship May 7.

The NCAA Golf Committee then will determine who gets the 53 at-large invitations into the postseason. That announcement is expected to be made about 6 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, May 9.

The six NCAA region championships will take place May 19-21 at these sites: Omni Tucson (Ariz.) National Resort; Colorado National Golf Club, Erie, Colo.; Golden Ocala (Fla.) Golf Club; Wolf Run Golf Club, Zionsville, Ind.; Pete Dye River Course, Blacksburg, Va.; and The Farms Golf Club, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
