Rib injury to keep McCloskey out of nationals
Monday, May 16, 2011
A rib injury Lisa McCloskey suffered during the Pac-10 Championship will derail the USC junior’s entire postseason as she will sit out of the NCAA Championship this week at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
“The area of her injury is still tender, and it’s probably best to not push and reaggravate it,” head coach Andrea Gaston said in a text message Monday.
As of May 14, McCloskey, ranked No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, was not certain that she would miss the national championship. She said she hit balls that day and was holding out hope that she could play.
“It’s definitely a bummer,” McCloskey said at the prospect of missing the entire postseason. It’s an especially brutal turn of events for McCloskey since she is from nearby Montgomery, Texas.
McCloskey withdrew from the final round of the Pac-10 Championship because of the injury, and was not able to participate in the NCAA West Regional at all. The top-ranked Trojans won both events. Junior Inah Park filled in for McCloskey at regionals, finishing T-17, and will play in the national championship. Park has played in the last two national championships.
