Tway, Oklahoma State breeze through regional
Monday, May 23, 2011
Team leader: Oklahoma State, 31-under 833
Individual leader: Kevin Tway (206), Oklahoma State
Also moving on: 2. Colorado State (851), 3. Northwestern (855), T-4. Georgia, Arizona State (857)
No surprise here: Oklahoma State didn’t even need to count U.S. Amateur champion and Hogan Award winner Peter Uihlein’s final-round score, and they still increased their lead Saturday at the South Central Regional. The Cowboys shot 6-under 282 Saturday, finishing at 833, 18 shots ahead of second-place Colorado State.
Uihlein shot a final-round 74 and tied for ninth, but the rest of the Cowboys were the story of the week, as Kevin Tway (10 under) claimed medalist honors, Talor Gooch (7 under) finished third and Sean Einhaus (6 under) tied for fourth. Morgan Hoffmann, who closed in 72, finished in 13th place.
The win was the eighth in 12 starts this year for the top-ranked Cowboys, who will now head back to Stillwater for the NCAA Championship on their home course, Karsten Creek.
Stop the presses: Auburn, the nation’s ninth-ranked team failed to advance to nationals, turning in a final-round 6-over 294. The Tigers finished four shots out of fifth place.
Blayne Barber and Niclas Carlsson led Auburn, both finishing T-9 at 4 under, but they didn’t get much help, as the Tigers’ next best finisher was Dominic Bozzelli at T-41. Auburn began the final round in second place, but received closing 78s from Michael Hebert and Kyle Kopsick.
Replacing Auburn in the runner-up spot was Colorado State, the 11 seed and the 65th-ranked team in the country. The Rams were led by Kory Harrell, Ryan Peterson and Mike Sorenson, who each finished T-16 at 1 under. Colorado State was 13 under as a team for the week. First-round leaer Zahkai Brown, who stumbled to an 82 to in Round 2, bounced back with a final-round 69 for the Rams.
Short Shots: Playing as an individual, Cal Poly’s Geoff Gonzalez closed with a 66 to claim the South Central Regional's individual qualifying spot. Gonzalez finished T-4 at 6 under. . . . Harris English led Georgia to a T-4 finish. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. . . . Thanks to a pair of closing 68s by Scott Pinckney and Phil Francis, 31st-ranked Arizona State moved on to the NCAA Championship.
