Last year: Italy's Francesco Molinari won his first WGC title, holding off Lee Westwood by a stroke. Tiger Woods tied for sixth, leaving him winless in a PGA Tour season for the first time in his career.
Last week: U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy won $2 million in the Shanghai Masters, beating Anthony Kim with a par on the first hole of a playoff. ... Bo Van Pelt took the Asia Pacific Classic in Malaysia, birdieing five of the last eight holes for a six-stroke victory. ... Sergio Garcia won the Andalucia Masters for his second straight European Tour victory. ... Koichiro Kawano beat Bae Sang-moon with a birdie on the sixth extra hole in the Japan Tour's Mynavi ABC.

The tournament is in its seventh season and third as a WGC event. ... Tiger Woods failed to qualify, marking the first time he hasn't been eligible for a WGC event. The tournament also is the only WGC event he has failed to win. ... Phil Mickelson won the 2007 and 2009 titles. ... Top-ranked Luke Donald withdrew to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. ... The Australian Open is next week at The Lakes in Sydney, followed by the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne. Woods will play in both events.

Purse: $2.5 million. Winner's share: $440,000.
Television: Golf Channel (Thursday-Friday, 4:30-7 p.m.).
Last year: John Cook successfully defended his title in the season-ending event, while Bernhard Langer took his first season points title.
Last event: Fred Couples won the AT&T Championship on Oct. 16 in San Antonio, shooting 62-62-66 for a seven-stroke victory — the largest margin on tour this year. Couples has two victories this year.
Notes: The top 30 on the money list qualified for the tournament. ... Tom Lehman, a three-time winner this year, leads the Charles Schwab Cup standings, 382 points ahead of Mark Calcavecchia. The winner in the points race will receive a $1 million annuity, and the second-place finisher will get a $500,000 annuity. ... Couples captained the winning U.S. Presidents Cup team in 2009 at Harding Park.

LPGA TOUR/JAPAN LPGA TOUR: MIZUNO CLASSIC

Purse: $1.2 million. Winner's share: $180,000.
Last year: South Korea's Jiyai Shin won the second of her two 2010 LPGA Tour titles, finishing with a 5-under 67 for a two-stroke victory over Yani Tseng.
Last event: Tseng won the LPGA Taiwan Championship on Oct. 23 for her 10th worldwide victory of the year and third in front of her home fans. The 22-year-old Taiwanese star has seven LPGA Tour wins this season, including major victories in the LPGA Championship and Women's British Open.
Notes: The top-ranked Tseng won the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open by seven strokes Sunday in China for her 11th worldwide title of year. The victory in the Ladies European Tour event was the 30th of her pro career. ... Annika Sorenstam swept the 2001-05 titles to become the first LPGA Tour player to win an event five straight times. ... Japanese star Ai Miyazato won the Evian Masters in France in July for her seventh career LPGA Tour victory. ... The LPGA Tour will be in Mexico next week for the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara.
