TaylorMade takes early lead at Industry Cup
Newport Beach, Calif. - After losing last year’s Industry Cup by one stroke, the No. 1 team from TaylorMade Golf came to the 2012 Industry Club with a mission.
“A little redemption,” said team member Pete Roberts.
In Saturday’s opening round over the North Course at Pelican Hill Golf Club, TaylorMade No. 1 posted a brilliant 10-under 132 total to take a two-stroke lead.
Ping No. 1 was second with a 134 total, while Ping No. 2 was third at 137. Next came TaylorMade No. 2 at 138.
Defending champion Callaway No. 1 opened with 147 to fall 15 strokes off the pace.
The Industry Cup, sponsored and run by Golfweek, will conclude Sunday with 18 holes on the South Course at the 36-hole Pelican Hill complex. The annual tournament is open to all golf companies. Each team is comprised of four individuals, who play four different games over four different 9-hole segments.
The competition Saturday was 9 holes of shamble and 9 holes of better-ball (four-ball). Sunday’s play includes 9 holes of Pinehurst and a final 9 holes in which each team must add together its three lowest 9-hole gross scores.
Members of TaylorMade No. 1 are Greg Cesario, Tom Kroll, Pete Roberts and Joe Ryon. Which of TaylorMade's popular white-headed drivers do these TaylorMade employees use, the R11 or the Burner SuperFast 2.0?
Two (Roberts and Ryon) carried R11 drivers while the other two (Cesario and Kroll) had Burner SuperFast 2.0 drivers.
The Ping No. 1 team includes Sean Free, Marty Jertson, Mike Nicolette and Christian Pena.
“(Ping CEO) John Solheim called me right before he left for the Presidents Cup,” Nicolette related. “He said, ‘I expect the Industry Cup to be here when I get back.’ We’re trying hard to make that come true.”
Pelican Hill, with two Tom Fazio golf courses, is a resort facility on high bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
