This is how an All-American event should end.

Alabama's Cory Whitsett outlasted San Diego State's Todd Baek and Missouri's Jace Long in a three-hole, sudden-death playoff Tuesday to win the Western Refining All-America Classic title at the par-71 El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas.

Playing the 18th hole, Whitsett and Long birdied the first hole of the playoff to eliminate Baek. They moved to No. 1 for the second playoff hole, and both players made par. Back to the 18th, Whitsett, 94th in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, birdied to win the title.

Baek had the low round of the day, a 4-under 67, while Whitsett shot 68 and Long posted 69.

Texas' Dylan Frittelli, the first-round leader who is No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarins, fell to T-5 after a final-round 75. He finished at 2 under for the tournament with Texas A&M's Jordan Russell. Georgia Tech's James White finished solo fourth with a final-round 69.

Texas freshman Jordan Spieth, Golfweek's top-ranked player, couldn't build on his momentum from his recent victory at the Isleworth Intercollegiate, finishing T-15 with Arkansas' Austin Cook at 5 over.

Only seven of the 29 in the tournament finished under par for the three rounds, and only four players broke 70 in the final round.
