Cauley making an impression at the pro level

SAN MARTIN, Calif. – Bud Cauley has made five of six PGA Tour cuts since leaving Alabama after his junior year and turning professional in June. He has made more than $330,000.
But he has a chance to make that look like chump change this week at the Frys.com Open at CordeValle Golf Club. At the end of the incomplete second round, Cauley stands at 7 under, one stroke behind clubhouse leader Paul Casey, in the chase for the $900,000 first prize.
“Playing out here definitely has sharpened my game,” said Cauley, a member of the victorious 2009 U.S. Walker Cup team. He followed a 69 on Thursday with a 66 on Friday. “I feel like I’m improving by playing out here, and that’s what I hoped would happen by leaving school a year early.”
At the moment, he’s exempt into Q-School second stage because he made the cut at the U.S. Open. He’d avoid Q-School altogether if he wins or reaches $786,977 in season earnings (No. 125 last year).
“I want to miss Q-School as much as all the rest of the guys,” he said, drawing laughter. “So I may need to earn a little bit more money than some of them in the field.”
