Cabrera-Bello atop Portugal Masters leaderboard
VILAMOURA, Portugal – Rafael Cabrera-Bello of Spain shot an 8-under 64 Saturday, giving him a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the Portugal Masters.
Cabrera-Bello had two eagles and five birdies, leaving him at 18-under 198 entering Sunday’s final round at the Oceanico Victoria course in the Algarve.
“I’ve been playing good the last few days,” said Cabrera-Bello, whose one European Tour victory came in 2009. “My goal today was to try and do the same thing. The two eagles definitely gave me a big boost and I think I played pretty solid. Hopefully, I can keep it up.”
Christian Nilsson of Sweden (66) and Felipe Aguilar of Chile (67) were a shot back.
“It’s a big week for me,” said Nilsson, who is trying to qualify for the world championship in Dubai. “I’m trying to get into the Top 60, so I hope for another good day, but you never know.”
Peter Hanson of Sweden put himself in contention with a 64 and was two strokes behind with Thomas Bjorn of Denmark. Hanson has finished in the top 10 seven times this season and has a shot at his fifth European Tour win.
“To shoot 64 today and get back into the tournament feels great,” Hanson said. “I took advantage of those par-5s on the front nine and managed to make some putts.”
South Africa’s Hennie Otto had a 63 for the day’s best score and was four back with three others, including second-round leader Simon Khan.
Germany’s Martin Kaymer, the tournament’s highest-ranked player at No. 6, was seven shots back.
