SKOKIE, Ill. -- Arkansas picked up its third title of the season Monday, holding off UCLA for a four-stroke victory at the Windon Memorial.
The Razorbacks, No. 5 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot rounds of 274-276-297 to post 7-over 847. UCLA shot a final-round 4-over 284, the best round on Monday, to move from fourth to second. Indiana also tied for second, while Purdue and host Northwestern rounded out the top 5.
Ethan Tracy, the 2011 Western Amateur champion, finished solo third to pace Arkansas. Josh Eure (T-8) also finished in the top 10 for the Razorbacks. Arkansas won its first two events of the season, the Gopher Invitational and Golfweek Conference Challenge, before a sixth-place finish at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational.
“I’m really proud of the guys and the way they hung in there today,” Arkansas head coach Brad McMakin said. “We didn’t play our best golf, but you have to be happy to still get the win. Ethan continues to play very good golf and had a chance to win this tournament going into the final round.”
Michigan senior Matt Thompson mixed seven birdies with two bogeys during a final-round 65 that earned him medalist honors. At 5-under 205, Thompson finished two shots ahead of Northwestern’s Erin Chun and four ahead of Tracy.
Making his first college start of the season, UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay shot rounds of 70-73-72 to tie for 22nd.
