Ernst, LSU sweep Cougar Classic

Led by medalist Austin Ernst, LSU claimed a five-shot win over North Carolina at the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall.

Ernst, the defending NCAA champion, closed with her second 67 of the week (67-69-67) to finish at 13 under and defeat Erica Popson of Tennessee by four shots. Popson closed in 72 to edge Florida’s Camilla Hedberg and LSU’s Tessa Teachman (T-3) by a shot.

Florida (8 under) finished third after an even-par final round, while North Carolina State and Georgia tied for fourth. Georgia’s Marta Silva Zamora, No. 1 in Golfweek’s preseason rankings, finished T-12, while Rocio Sanchez Lobato led the Bulldogs with a T-6 finish.

LSU was No. 8 in Golfweek’s preseason rankings. Alabama, which finished T-7, was No. 3, and Tennessee was No. 7. Ernst was No. 10 in the individual rankings.
