Simpson trying not to focus on $10M bonus

LEMONT, Ill. – The FedEx Cup champion, crowned at the end of next week after two more tournaments, will receive a $10 million bonus. Webb Simpson is currently No. 1 in points. That means commas and zeroes sometimes flash through his mind.
“We want to win golf tournaments, but when $10 million is at stake, you can’t help but think about that,” Simpson, winner of two of his last three starts, said here Tuesday at the BMW Championship. “Part of me is kind of happy this week isn’t determining who’s going to win because you get one more week to focus on the golf.”
And just what might Simpson buy with $10 million? To his credit, his thoughts haven’t strayed that far yet.
“More diapers?” said Simpson, whose son, James, was born Feb. 15. “I don’t have anything in mind yet. We’ll see. My wife and I will think of something fun.”
And in the meantime, try not to think much about the cash grab.
“As soon as I start thinking too much ahead about Atlanta (next week’s Tour Championship) or winning the FedEx Cup, that’s kind of when I get in trouble,” he said. “You start expecting results or thinking about results. The best I play is when I think about my next shot.”
