Tuesday, September 13, 2011
Led by Western Amateur champion Ethan Tracy, Arkansas won its season-opening event, the Gopher Invitational, by three shots over North Texas on Monday. Tracy, who topped UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay in the Western Am finals this summer, finished fifth at 2 over par at Spring Hill GC.
Arkansas’ Sebastian Cappelen and Austin Cook were one shot back of Tracy in a tie for sixth.
Iowa placed a pair of players 1-2, with Chris Brant (2 under) taking medalist honors and Barrett Kelpin (1 under) finishing second. Brant closed with a final-round 69, while Kelpin was done-in by a closing 75. The Hawkeyes didn’t receive any other help, however, as Steven Ihm (T-52) was the next highest Iowa finisher. Iowa claimed sixth place as a result.
Led by Max Scodro (T-6) and Niall Platt (T-9), Notre Dame took third place, while SMU finished fourth in their first event under head coach Josh Gregory.
