Fresh off an eight-hour drive from Boise State’s season-opening event, Broncos head coach Kevin Burton was trying to prepare for a tournament of his own. Burton is in the field for this week’s Boise Open on the Nationwide Tour.

He earned his spot by finishing second at last month’s Rocky Mountain PGA Professional Championship.

Boise State finished fourth at the Palouse Collegiate, which ended Tuesday. The team arrived in Boise about midnight after making the approximately eight-hour drive from Pullman, Wash. Burton wasn’t able to register for the Boise Open until Wednesday, the tournament’s eve, and couldn’t play a practice round because he wasn’t in the Wednesday pro-am.

“It’s been pretty hectic,” said Burton, who finished second at the 1995 Boise Open. “When we were up there at Pullman, I snuck out and hit some balls. I've prepared a lot.”

Burton played on the PGA Tour in 1997. He has also played on the Australian PGA Tour 1988-90 and the Nike Tour (now Nationwide Tour) in 1996 and 2001. He is a four-time winner of the Idaho Open and (1999, '02, '03 and '08) and won the 1995 California Open.

Burton is scheduled to tee off at 2:55 p.m. Thursday with long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski, who received a sponsor exemption into the event, and Adam Martens.

Burton's performance at the Rocky Mountain PGA Professional Championship also earned him an invitation to the 45th PGA Professional National Championship, June 24-27, 2012, at Bayonet and Black Horse in Seaside, Calif. The top 25 finishers there earn berths in the PGA Championship.
