Port wins Women’s Mid-Am for record 4th time
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Ellen Port, 50, became the first four-time winner of the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur on Thursday with a 2-and-1 victory over Martha Leach at Bayville Golf Club.
Port, of St. Louis, set the record for longest span between victories, having last won the U.S. Women’s Mid-Am in 2000. (She also won in 1995 and ’96.) Port also tied the mark for the most Women’s Mid-Amateur match-play victories (56).
In the scheduled 18-hole final against Leach, the 2009 U.S. Women’s Mid-Am champ, Port took a 2-up lead after two holes, lost it after No. 6, then pushed ahead on the back nine and never relinquished her advantage.
