Kent St. wins shortened Inverness Intercollegiate

TOLEDO, Ohio – Kent State rolled to the team title in the abbreviated Inverness Intercollegiate, but Dugan Murphy pulled off a hometown upset.
Murphy, a senior at Toledo, shot a bogey-free, 5-under 66 on Sept. 27 at the storied Inverness Club to win the tournament, reduced to 18 holes because of heavy rain that washed out a scheduled 36-hole day Sept. 26.
Murphy, 22, of Okemos, Mich., had played only 28 tournament rounds in his career, compiling a 78.7 scoring average. He did not play in the Rockets’ season-opening event, a 16th-place finish at the Northern Intercollegiate.
Kent State, led by co-runner-up Taylor Pendrith’s 1-under 70, shot 3-over 287. MacKenzie Hughes and Kyle Kmiecik shot 72 to share seventh for the Golden Flashes.
Liberty shot 291 to edge Toledo by one stroke for second place. Kentucky (294) and Michigan State (295) rounded out the top 5.
