MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Virginia’s men shot 10-under 278 in the final round Sept. 27 to earn a victory at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club in Virginia finished at a school-record 27-under 837, seven shots better than runner-up East Carolina, which shot a final-round 281.

The Cavaliers were led by Ben Kohles and freshman Denny McCarthy, who tied for fourth individually at 8-under 208. Virginia’s Mac McLaughlin and Bruce Woodall tied for 11th. Virginia’s previous best tournament total was 22-under 830 at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course at the Stanford Shootout in October 1992.

East Carolina’s Adam Stephenson finished second at 10-under 206, and teammate Harold Varner was another shot back in third for the Pirates.

Wichita State finished third at 12-under 852 after opening the season with a pair of victories (WSU Diet Pepsi Shocker Invitational, UTA/Waterchase Invitational), and Iowa State was fourth at 10 under. Atlantic Coast Conference teams Virginia Tech (855) and Wake Forest (856) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
