Texas freshman Jordan Spieth has received a sponsor exemption to the Valero Texas Open, tournament officials told Golfweek. Spieth, a member of the 2011 Walker Cup team, is No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings and No. 3 in the R&A’s World Amateur Golf Ranking.

The Texas Open is scheduled for April 19-22, two weeks after the Masters. It will be Spieth’s second PGA Tour sponsor exemption of 2012, leaving him five exemptions this year from the maximum seven allowed to Tour non-members each year.

Spieth also played the Northern Trust Open, where he missed the cut by two shots with rounds of 76-71. That event was held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., the site of this year’s NCAA Championship.

This will be the first appearance in the Texas Open in San Antonio for Spieth, who lives in Dallas. He has made headlines by contending during the final round of the past two HP Byron Nelson Championships in Irving. He got within three strokes of the lead both times, eventually finishing 16th in 2010 and 32nd last year.

Spieth is unlikely to play the Nelson this year, as it overlaps with NCAA regionals. The Texas Open’s final two rounds conflict with Texas A&M’s Aggie Invitational. Spieth previously missed the Puerto Rico Classic to compete in the Northern Trust Open.

The Texas Open also has extended an invitation to Jason Gore.
