KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Kent State men’s team shot 12-under 272 in Sunday’s final round of the Irish Creek Collegiate, giving the Golden Flashes a school-record 27-under 825 total and handing head coach Herb Page his 75th career victory.
Kent State, No. 21 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, defeated No. 16 Duke by 14 shots. Mercer (843) finished third, followed by host Charlotte (849).
“This was a really fun week to coach and to watch,” Page said. “Our kids put up quite a few red numbers, and 14 of the 15 rounds by our players were par or better. It gives you tremendous satisfaction to see everyone have it going like that at the same time.”
All five team members shot under par for Kent State in the final round. Sophomore Taylor Pendrith notched birdies on three of his final four holes to close with a 6-under 65 and tie for third at 8-under 205 with teammate MacKenzie Hughes (69). Sophomore Kyle Kmiecik (70) tied for seventh, Corey Conners (68) tied for 10th and Taylor Zoller tied for 14th. The Flashes actually had six players in the top 15, as Kevin Miller competed as an individual and tied for 12th.
Mercer’s James Beale shot 7-under 64 in the final round for a 13-under 200 total, two shots ahead of Duke’s Julian Suri (65).
