McIlroy creeps closer to Tiger in updated odds

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The odds entering the 2012 Masters are changing, with Tiger Woods still the favorite of Las Vegas sports books. On the eve of the 76th Masters, with icons Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player preparing for ceremonial tee shots to start Thursday's first round, Rory McIlroy is moving closer to Woods.

Since mid-August - when McIlroy was a 10-1 favorite, with Woods and Phil Mickelson at 12-1 - the odds barely have moved.

On Monday, McIlroy, the 22-year-old Northern Irishman and reigning U.S. Open champion, was a 5-1 choice. At 9-2, he has inched closer to Woods, the four-time Masters champion who is looking to win at Augusta National for the first time since 2005.

Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, has fallen back from 10-1 to 12-1. England's Luke Donald, ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking yet still searching for his first major championship, remains a 15-1 choice. Countryman Lee Westwood, also in search of his first major, has moved from 18-1 to 20-1.

Hunter Mahan, the first two-time winner on the PGA Tour in 2012 after a one-stroke victory over Carl Pettersson at the Shell Houston Open on Sunday, is 25-1 along with 2011 Masters runner-up Adam Scott.

Defending champion Charl Schwartzel is 40-1, but he was 30-1 just three weeks ago after two good weeks that included a T-5 at the Honda Classic and a T-4 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. Missed cuts in Tampa and Houston have left the South African and the bookies in Vegas bewildered.

One of the former champions who is getting little respect is Angel Cabrera, at 100-1. The Argentine has won two major championships, the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters, and in both cases was overlooked by pre-tournament oddsmakers.
