25. Texas
2011-12 Golfweek rank: 28
Go-to girl: Bertine Strauss
Season outlook: Last season, head coach Martha Richards’ fifth in Austin, the Longhorns had achieved significant depth and experience. Two victories in the fall led to a top-10 ranking to close the first half of the season, which in turn led Richards to call last year’s squad her strongest team yet.
But last spring, half of the Longhorns’ leading duo had to take the bench. Madison Pressel missed all of the postseason with a right shoulder injury. Richards says Pressel, now a senior, is still taking it a day at a time for the fall season. Texas’ first tournament is the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sept. 21, and if she’s healthy, Pressel should play a major role.
The Longhorns’ other leader last season, Nicole Vandermade, has graduated, but Texas returns the other four players who played to a T-13 finish at last year’s NCAA Championship. That group includes seniors Haley Stephens, Katelyn Sepmoree and Desiree Dubreuil, as well as sophomore Bertine Strauss, who tied for eighth at the Big 12 Championship and was the low Longhorn at NCAAs (T-33). Three freshmen also join the roster, including Texas native Tezira Abe and Canadian Taylor Kim.
Vandermade was a big loss for Texas, but there’s still plenty of talent in Austin.
