No. 24 California
2011-12 Golfweek rank: 10
Go-to girl: Nicola Rossler
Season outlook: The Golden Bears made a lot of headlines last season, from Pac-12 triumph to NCAA Championship disappointment. Still, with three victories at season’s end, Cal had earned its place as one of the nation's top-10 teams.
Much of that success was directly attributable to a trio of seniors – Emily Childs, Daniela Holmqvist and Joanne Lee – who not only led Cal in scoring but also in intangibles. Head coach Nancy McDaniel can’t sugarcoat the loss, because she knows that threesome will be missed.
Still, two players return from the Bears' Pac-12 Championship lineup, including junior Nicola Rossler and senior Jacqueline Williams. Senior Joi Pentin and sophomores Jo Ee Kok and Morgan Thompson also return.
Then there are the five freshman, a group which includes Childs’ younger sister Carly, who qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur earlier this month. McDaniel said all of the newcomers have the games to contribute in their first season, but she isn’t sure exactly what to expect.
“If (the) freshman can step up, that’s great,” McDaniel said.
It will be a wait-and-see kind of fall in Berkeley.
