Go-to-guy: Julien Brun
Season outlook: Many teams relied heavily on freshmen last season. Texas won a national title thanks in large part to the performance of Jordan Spieth. Justin Thomas helped carry Alabama to the final match.
And TCU’s Julien Brun had a school-record 70.5 stroke average, won three tournaments and was T-2 for the Horned Frogs in their 13th NCAA Championship appearance under coach Bill Montigel.
Brun, a first-team All-American, has the potential to again be one of the top players in the country this season. He had a busy summer – he helped Europe win the Palmer Cup and competed in the U.S. Amateur, British Amateur and French Open – and seems poised to lead TCU, which lost senior leader Johan de Beer to graduation, in its first season as a member of the Big 12.
Aside from Brun, the Hornet Frogs also return seniors Daniel Jennevret and Eli Cole, who redshirted last season and advanced to match play at this year’s U.S. Amateur. Paul Barjon of France, the only freshman on the roster, is expected to have an immediate impact.
“Those four guys will play in every tournament, I can tell you that right now,” Montigel said.
