Central Michigan to add women’s golf team
Friday, December 7, 2012
After a 30-plus-year hiatus as a varsity sport, women's golf will return to Central Michigan. The Chippewas will field a women’s golf team beginning in the 2014-15 academic year.
"This is truly an exciting day for Central Michigan University and our athletics program as we continue to provide additional opportunities for young women to pursue their athletic and academic dreams," CMU Director of Athletics Dave Heeke said.
The university will hire a head coach in the spring of 2013, giving the new coach the 2013-14 season to develop a recruiting base to be ready for the 2014-15 season.
The restoration of women’s golf at Central Michigan, which last fielded a team in 1982, coincides with the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark federal legislation that guaranteed equal access in education.
