A west Texas PGA professional was shot and killed after he interrupted a burglary while visiting family in Roswell, N.M., investigators said.

Saul Sanchez, 39, the head professional at Yoakum County Golf Club in Denver City, Texas, had returned to Roswell for his sister's funeral and was staying with a friend Dec. 11, according to local media reports. Sanchez, who was with his wife and two of his three daughters, surprised the burglar, who authorities said shot Sanchez in front of his family and fled. The suspect remains at large.

Friends and family gathered Dec. 13 at Spring River Golf Course in Roswell for a memorial round of golf in Sanchez's honor.

"He wouldn't have wanted anything else besides to enjoy this beautiful day," Sergio Flores, Sanchez's older brother, told KRQE-Channel 13.

"He worked really, really hard to become a (PGA) member, and I know he was so excited when that came true for him," said Carlton Blewett, Spring River's director of golf.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Roswell Convention & Civic Center.
