The Ping S56 iron

Hunter Mahan won the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open even though he was not allowed to use his favorite set of irons. Earlier that week at the Ping’s Phoenix headquarters, Mahan tried the S56 irons for the first time and loved how the updated sole design worked through the turf. He asked if he could use the S56s in that week’s PGA Tour event but was told they had not been submitted to the USGA for testing and were not on the Conforming Club list, so he used his trusty S57 irons instead.

Designed with better players in mind, the S56 irons have a compact head, thin topline, little offset and only a small amount of perimeter weighting for forgiveness. They are designed to enhance a player’s shotmaking abilities and feel.

Ping added a pair of stabilizing bars behind the face of each club. The bars are narrower on the long irons to encourage a higher ball flight, but the short irons have thicker bars to encourage the penetrating and controlled trajectory accomplished players seek.

To pull the sweet spot into the center of the clubface and away from the hosel, Ping added a small amount of tungsten in the toe. To further ensure players receive optimal feel, and that the ideal swing weight is achieved, a factory-installed cartridge behind face that Ping calls a custom tuning port has been installed.

When they were originally released, the S56 irons carried a retail price of $899.
