Thompson shoots 70, leads Jones Cup by 1
SEA ISLAND, Ga. - Curtis Thompson shot a 2-under 70 Friday to take a one-shot lead over Manav Shah after the opening round of the Jones Cup Invitational.
Thompson, the brother of Lexi Thompson, won the Dixie Amateur in December. The LSU freshman is No. 65 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.
Shah, who transferred from San Diego to UCLA last summer and is sitting out this season per NCAA rules, was the only other player to break par on a brutal day for scoring at Ocean Forest Golf Club. Alabama freshman Justin Thomas shot 72, while teammate Cory Whitsett is among three players tied for fourth at 73.
Reigning U.S. Amateur champ Kelly Kraft shot 78 in Round 1.
