GB&I Curtis Cup manager Turner, 50, dies

Sue Turner, the manager of the GB&I team for this year’s Curtis Cup, to be played at Nairn (Scotland) Golf Club, died Feb. 14 after battling an undisclosed illness since last fall. She was 50.

Turner played for Wales as a girl, and represented her country at the Home Internationals in 1982, ’84, ’85, ’86, ’91 and ’94. She later captained the Welsh team - leading the squad to victory in 2008 and ’09 - and remained the team captain until her death.

The Ladies Golf Union selected Turner to captain the GB&I squad at the 2007 Five Nations Trophy, and last year she captained the GB&I under-16 girls team in the inaugural Junior Vagliano Trophy.

“Ladies’ golf in Great Britain & Ireland is poorer today following the loss of Sue Turner,” said Shona Malcol, CEO of the Ladies Golf Union. “Her enthusiasm and love of life were infectious and permeated through every team she worked with. She gave us so much, and had so much more to give.”

Turner is survived by her husband, Mike, and daughter, Lottie, whom she called her “two favorite people.”
