California defended its title Sunday at the Peg Barnard Invitational, finishing 19 shots ahead of tournament host Stanford. It’s the first win of the 2011-12 season for Cal.

The Golden Bears, No. 17 in Golfweek’s rankings, shot a two-day total of 19-over 587 (295-292) for their second consecutive victory at Stanford Golf Course. Last year, Cal won this event by 18 shots, then won its next start, the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational.

Washington (No. 14) was third on the team leaderboard, one shot behind Stanford, while Fresno State (No. 81) and Oregon State (No. 50) tied for fifth at 4-over 608.

Cal senior Emily Childs also was the tournament medalist for the second consecutive year. She was the solo medalist last year, but her 3-over 145 total left her tied with Fresno State’s Christine Uhalde this year. They were named co-medalists.

Childs’ senior teammate Daniela Holmqvist and Washington’s SooBin Kim were third at 4-over 146. Another Cal player, Joanne Lee, was seventh and JoEe Kok, who played as an individual for the Golden Bears, was T-10.
