ECU captures Seahawk Invite title
WILMINGTON, N.C. – After four top-4 finishes this season, the East Carolina men’s team finally broke through. The Pirates picked up their first victory of the season Monday, posting a final-round 2-under 286 and an even-par 864 total to take the title at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. The Pirates had four players finish in the top 13, led by senior Adam Stephenson, who tied for seventh at 1-under 215.
ECU, No. 51 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished nine strokes ahead of No. 45 Wake Forest at the Country Club of Landfall’s Nicklaus Course. No. 78 South Carolina finished third at 11-over 875, No. 26 Chattanooga was fourth at 879 and No. 88 North Carolina-Wilmington, the host team, was fifth at 880.
Three Pirates tied for 13th at 4-over 220: Sophomore Ryan Eibner, junior Eric Brady and senior Harold Varner, who posted a final-round 4-under 68. Varner shot a combined 6 under in the final two rounds after posting a 10-over 82 in Round 1.
South Carolina senior Wesley Bryan earned medalist honors with a 7-under 209 (68-71-70), defeating Wake Forest’s Cyrus Stewart (71-72-68=211) by two strokes. It was Bryan’s second college victory, his first since sharing medalist honors at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate in his freshman season of 2008-09.
