KAPALUA, Hawaii -- A year later, and the same guy is atop the leaderboard at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Jonathan Byrd, who prevailed in a playoff over Robert Garrigus last year at Kapalua, fired an opening-round, 6-under 67 that gave him a one-shot lead over four players. Webb Simpson, who finished second in the 2011 FedEx Cup race and on the money list, is among the players at 5 under.
Thirteen of the 27 players in the field broke par on Friday.

• Rory Sabbatini was 2 over par for the day before he even hit a shot in his second round. The fiery South African was docked a two-stroke penalty for showing up 20 seconds late to his tee time at Kapalua. He is now 2 over par overall.
• Second-year Tour pro Chris Kirk has the low round of the day so far. He just went eagle-birdie-par-birdie-birdie on Nos. 5-9 to move to 5 under for the day, 3 under for the week, and just three shots off Jonathan Byrd’s lead.
• That didn’t take long for Webb Simpson to grab a share of the lead. He just rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 2 to move to 6 under. Overnight leader Jonathan Byrd has just teed off.
• Leaderboard looks a little different now, and the leaders have only been on the course for about an hour. Webb Simpson has the outright lead, at 7 under, while Steve Stricker has joined Jonathan Byrd at 6 under.
• Steve Stricker continues to play well at Kapalua. In his past three starts here, he’s 2nd-10th-4th. With a birdie at No. 5, Stricks is now tied for the lead with Webb Simpson.
• How about Rory Sabbatini? Triple-bogeyed the first hole, after receiving a penalty. Didn't make a 5 the rest of the front nine. And now, after a birdie on 10, he's moved to 2 under for the event.
• Quick look at the ’board as our leader, Steve Stricker, makes his way to the back nine: Stricker (-9), Simpson (-7), Laird (-7), Byrd (-7)
• Stricker is bogey-free on the day, up to 10 under and ahead by two strokes over Scot Martin Laird.
• A bogey-free, 7-under 66 by Chris Kirk is the low round of the week so far and, more importantly, vaults him 18 spots on the leaderboard, from 23rd to fifth. At 5-under 141, he’s five back of leader Steve Stricker.
• Kevin Na holed out from 221 yards for eagle on the 17th, then drained a 10-foot eagle putt on 18 to polish off a 9-under 64. He’s moved into solo second, after those back-to-back eagles. Also the first player ever to close with two consecutive eagles at Kapalua.
• Steve Stricker buries a 12-foot eagle putt on 15, begins to create some separation. Now at 13 under, four ahead of Kevin Na.
