PINEHURST, N.C. – A pair of home-state players took the titles Thursday at the 34th Junior North & South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort.

Kendrick Vinar Jr. of Hillsborough, N.C., won the boys division, and Catherine Ashworth of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., won the girls title. Both divisions played Pinehurst’s Nos. 4, 5 and 8 courses, with the boys finishing on No. 4 and the girls playing their final round on No. 5.

Vinar, who finished fourth last year, shot three consecutive sub-par rounds (71-66-67) to finish at 12-under 204 and win by two shots over Cameron Young of Scarborough, N.Y. Tyler McDaniel of Manchester, Ky., finished third at 9-under 207.

Ashworth posted a 1-over 217 total (71-73-73) to win by five strokes over three golfers at 6-over 222: Kayla Katterhenry of Newburg, Ind., Katie Page of Louisville, Ky., and Alaina Yeatts of Durham, N.C. Defending champion Kari Bellville of Granger, Ind., tied for fifth, another shot back.

The field included golfers from 20 states and three foreign countries.
