CHESTERTON, Ind. - Trey Mullinax fired a final-round, 9-under 63 to leap from a tie for 25th to the title at the 37th Northern Amateur at the par-72 Sand Creek Country Club.
The 63 set a course record and featured seven birdies in the Alabama junior's first eight holes.
"I definitely ate my Wheaties this morning," Mullinax, of Birmingham, told the Northwest Times of Indiana. "I hit the ball well all week, and I came into today knowing that I had to do some work. I just wanted to go shot-for-shot."
Mullinax cleared Brian Campbell by a shot, and the group of Zhong Yang Fu, Chris Hemmerich, Brett Nymeyer and Marcelo Rozo by two strokes.
Mullinax's 63 was the best round of the tournament, and four shots better than anyone shot on Friday (David Cooke shot a 5-under 67).
