After quick toast, Els opens a new chapter

AKRON, Ohio – The London tabloids ran stories last week about Open Championship winner Ernie Els and his decision not to drink alcohol months before the 141st Open at Royal Lytham.
Els did, in fact, decide to abstain, but the celebration Sunday night at his home in London with his wife, Liezl, and friends was a reason for Els to indulge that one night, using the Claret Jug as the vessel for red wine and champagne.
“I just stopped for a while because I didn't want to do it anymore,” Els said of his self-imposed ban. “I don't know if I'll stop full time. I think I might have a beer or two again. But I think at my age (42), it's better to drink a little less than drink too many.”
Els, who is seventh in the FedEx Cup points list entering this weeks WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, plans to continue to abstain from any alcohol – at least through the playoffs.
“After Sunday, I'm ready to hang it up again for a while, maybe through the FedEx and maybe have a couple then again,” Els said. “I don't like those mornings-after anymore.”
