AIKEN, S.C. – Mitch Gray birdied his final two holes at Palmetto Golf Club to punctuate a five-shot victory Sunday in the Palmetto Amateur.
Gray, a recent Campbell graduate from Florence, S.C., offset four bogeys with five birdies in a final-round 69 for a 5-under 275 total. Gray was the only player under par at the storied Palmetto layout.
Scott Strohmeyer, a rising senior at Alabama from Tuscaloosa who was just one week removed from the Crimson Tide's runner-up NCAA finish, shot 71 for a 280 total and second place. Tom Lovelady, a sophomore at Alabama from Birmingham, shot 70 to finish third at 281.
Ben Juffer, a senior at Kansas State from West Des Moines, Iowa, vaulted into fourth place with a final-round 65 and 282 total.
Austin Langdale, a high-school senior from Townville, S.C., and a Clemson commitment, struggled on the weekend after having led for the first two rounds. He tied for 10th at 285.
