Need proof? Among the top seven players after 54 holes, there is one Northern Irishman, one Swede, one South African, one Belgian, one Englishman, one Furykman and one golfer from Eatonton, Ga.
Co-leader Jim Furyk makes his home in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., so he and Blake Adams, representing the state of Georgia, are the lone Americans in the top seven.
Of the last 10 U.S. Opens, only four have been won by Americans (Tiger Woods in 2002 and 2008, Lucas Glover in 2009 and Furyk in 2003).
The six non-American champions were Rory McIlroy (2011), Graeme McDowell (2010), Angel Cabrera (2007), Geoff Ogilvy (2006), Michael Campbell (2005) and Retief Goosen (2004).
