Popson leads Tennessee to LSU Classic title
Scores
Tennessee upset SEC foe LSU on the Tigers' home course March 11, winning the LSU Golf Classic by two shots. It’s the first win of the season for the Lady Vols.
Tennessee, No. 22 in Golfweek’s rankings, played its way into a share of the lead during Round 2 at The University Club in Baton Rouge, La. Tennessee then shot a final-round 5-over 293 to beat LSU (No. 7) by two shots on the day and for the tournament. The Lady Vols finished with a 16-over 880 total.
North Carolina (No. 9) and Vanderbilt (No. 8) were third and fourth, respectively.
Junior Erica Popson, a recent selection to the U.S. Curtis Cup squad, gave Tennessee a big push with her 2-under 214 total. Popson has battled a left thumb injury for much of the past two years but had surgery in the offseason. The round left her tied for medalist honors with North Carolina’s Catherine O’Donnell, who also had thumb surgery in the offseason.
LSU players Madelene Sagstrom and Austin Ernst claimed the next two spots on the individual leaderboard. Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex and North Carolina State’s Augusta James tied for fifth.
