LAKESIDE, Calif. – The wins just keep coming for the San Diego State men’s team and J.J. Spaun.

The senior earned medalist honors for the third time in 11 days, and the Aztecs won their fourth consecutive title March 23 at the Barona Collegiate Cup.

San Diego State, No. 14 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished with a 54-hole total of 29-under 1,051 at Barona Creek Golf Course, winning their home event for the third year in a row by two shots over USC. The sixth-ranked Trojans, who trailed San Diego State by eight strokes through two rounds, took the lead late in the final round. But the Aztecs finished 6 under on the last four holes, with USC going 2 under during that span. North Texas finished third at 20-under 1,060, followed by eighth-ranked Georgia Tech (1,066) and Kent State (1,067).

“(This win) is a great accomplishment,” said Aztecs head coach Ryan Donovan. “Today, the guys stayed patient even though we started off a little slow . . . and finished strong, which I always love to see. You really can’t take away the experience level of this team, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Spaun posted three birdies over the final four holes to give him a three-stroke win at 14-under 202. He shot rounds of 67-67-68 to extend his streak of consecutive sub-70 rounds to seven in a row. Five golfers tied for second at 205. Spaun won in each of his two starts last week at The Farms Collegiate Invitational (March 12-13) by two strokes and at the National Invitational Tournament (March 16-17) by four strokes. His three individual titles in 2012 are the most by an Aztecs player in a single calendar year since Kevin Riley won three in 1990. Spaun now has five college titles overall.

Fellow Aztecs senior Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) also posted three birdies on his final four holes to vault him into seventh place at 10-under 206.
