GREENSBORO, Ga. – It was a clean sweep for the Alabama men’s team and Cory Whitsett at the Linger Longer Invitational. It just took Whitsett a little, well, longer.
Whitsett, a sophomore, shot a 8-under-par 64 Sunday to tie for the lead at 8-under 208 with Georgia’s Nick Reach (68) after 72 holes, then won the individual title with an eagle on the fourth playoff hole. As a team, the Crimson Tide had a much easier time, shooting a final-round 14-under 274 to finish with a 26-under 838 total and defeating Georgia by 14 shots at Reynolds Plantation’s Great Waters Course. Chattanooga finished third at 6-over 870, another 18 shots behind Georgia.
It was Alabama’s second consecutive Linger Longer title and its second consecutive victory, following a 22-stroke victory at the Schenkel Invitational, where the Tide shot 47 under. Alabama, No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, has now won three of its four spring starts, with its victories coming by a combined 54 shots.
Whitsett’s final round tied the school record of 8 under he shared with Bud Cauley and Chip Deason. His round included a birdie on the first, a hole-out with an 8-iron for double eagle on the par-5 second hole – putting him 4 under after two holes. He had another hole-out for eagle on the 16th hole – also with an 8-iron.
In the playoff, both golfers birdied the par-5 18th on the first three holes of the playoff. Reach then birdied No. 18 again, but an eagle by Whitsett gave him his third college victory.
