Player of the week: Cory Whitsett, Alabama
Monday, March 26, 2012
All the Crimson Tide sophomore did was shoot an 8-under 64 on March 25 in the final round of the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga., then go 5 under in four playoff holes to earn the individual victory over Georgia's Nick Reach. Whitsett’s final round tied the school record of 8 under he shared with Bud Cauley and Chip Deason. His round included a birdie on the first and a hole-out with an 8-iron for double eagle on the par-5 second hole – putting him 4 under after two holes. He had another hole-out for eagle on the 16th hole – also with an 8-iron. In the playoff, both golfers birdied the par-5 18th on the first three holes of the playoff. Reach then birdied No. 18 again, but an eagle by Whitsett gave him his third college victory. Second-ranked Alabama won the team title by 14 shots over Georgia.
