Fantasy Tip Sheet: Wells Fargo Championship
There will be plenty of big names to track this week at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.: Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood and Webb Simpson among them.
But it is one player who is returning from a three-week layoff whom our fantasy panel thinks has the best chance at one of the premier stops on the PGA Tour.
That'd be Phil Mickelson.
Lefty is coming off a disappointing Sunday at the Masters, faltering early to give Bubba Watson a chance to move into contention and eventually take the green jacket.
Mickelson has had plenty of success at Quail Hollow, finishing T-12 or better seven times.
As for our panel, Jim McCabe has taken a commanding lead after correctly selecting Jason Dufner to win the Zurich Classic in New Orleans last weekend. Newcomer Ryan Lavner had a pair of picks that carded him more than $400,000 to make a move toward the $1 million mark.
Here is a look at whom they like this week:
| Rank | Winner | Wild Card | Last Week | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Rude |
Jim Furyk Good history here and in good form. Won at Quail Hollow in 2006 and was second the year before. He's in form now, too - no worse than 11th in his last four PGA Tour starts. That includes a playoff loss at Transitions Championship. |
Ben Curtis Has a victory and two other top 15s in his last three Tour starts. Was second at Quail Hollow four years ago.. |
Winner: Justin Rose ($160,000); wild card: Ernie Els ($691,200). 2012 total: $5,441,617. |
||
McCabe |
Phil Mickelson What's not to like? He's had three weeks off after having had a stretch of golf in which he recorded a first, a second, a third, and a fourth in six tournaments. Oh, and in eight starts at Quail Hollow the lefthander has been T-12 or better seven times. |
Johnson Wagner Had it going pretty well earlier this season, so maybe a return to his home area will rekindle things. |
Winner: Jason Dufner ($1,152,000); wild card: Graeme McDowell ($14,208). 2012 total: $6,913,527. |
||
Martin |
Hunter Mahan Has finished in the top 25 in all but one start this season. Has four consecutive top-25s at Quail Hollow. |
David Toms The 2003 champion here has made seven of nine cuts this year. |
Winner: Keegan Bradley (MC); wild card: Cameron Tringale ($199,467). 2012 total: $3,616,926. |
||
Miceli |
Rory McIlroy Looking to regain World No. 1, with all his time off he should be fresh. |
Brendon de Jonge Had been struggling, but a good week last week in New Orleans and his game may be returning. |
Winner: Steve Stricker ($230,400); wild card: David Duval ($13,056). 2012 total: $5,745,731. |
||
Ringler |
Jim Furyk His form at Quail Hollow is very good with a win in 2006 and four top 10s in eight starts. And his 2012 form includes finishes in the top 11 in his last four starts. |
Brian Davis Trending in the right direction. Made seven cuts in a row and finished T-16 here last year. |
Winner: Charles Howell III ($25,600); wild card: Graeme McDowell ($14,208). 2012 total: $4,231,447. |
||
Lavner |
Phil Mickelson Putting better than he has in years, Lefty has four top 5s this season and an outstanding record at Quail Hollow: 6 top 10s in eight career starts. |
J.B. Holmes Seems to be rounding into form, with top-15 finishes in two of his past three starts. Just needs the putter to get hot. |
Winner: Steve Stricker ($230,400); wild card: Cameron Tringale ($199,467). 2012 total: $507,987. |
